Vinod Gupta is a name that many people have heard. However, many are not fully aware of his story and life.
To begin with, Gupta was born in the mid-1940s. He was born in India, in a small village called Rampur Manhyaran. His life as a child was not one of convenience or affluence. Far from it, Vinod Gupta did not have electricity, running water, indoor toilets, or even normal roads to travel on.
Despite these humble beginnings, however, Gupta was commissioned to the Indian Air Force in 1964. There, he was a Flying Officer in the Engineering unit. He progressed to become a squadron leader until his resignation in 1967.
Upon completing his service, Gupta went on to complete his high school education and then enrolled in IIT, where he majored in agricultural engineering. Then, he took a long journey, enrolling at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln to receive his graduate degree.
After graduating from the American school, Gupta decided to move to Omaha, also in Nebraska. He began his career as a marketing research analyst with Commodore Corporation, which manufactures mobile homes. As part of his work, he was asked to do research into the company’s rivals, which led him to the discovery that getting such information was incredibly difficult.
Never one to let difficulty stop him, Vinod Gupta came up with a unique plan to make a list of rivals himself, which started by scouring the yellow pages all over the country. Gupta then struck a deal with Commodore that he would provide this hard-earned information to them for free if he was permitted to also sell that information to the company’s competitors. Gupta then created and sent out mailers utilizing the information he’d compiled, which launched his unique success and set him on a path to becoming the respected businessman and philanthropist he is today.
